Pelvic Health Physiotherapy
Pelvic health physiotherapy for women: what it can help with.
Pelvic health physiotherapy supports women through pregnancy, postnatal recovery, pelvic girdle pain, abdominal separation, bladder symptoms, and return to exercise. It is practical, individual, and focused on helping you feel stronger and more confident.
A 2024 systematic review found postpartum pelvic floor muscle training reduced the odds of urinary incontinence by 37% and pelvic organ prolapse by 56% compared with control groups.
Reasons people seek pelvic health physiotherapy
Common reasons include pelvic girdle pain, lower back or hip pain during pregnancy, postnatal weakness, diastasis recti, discomfort with movement, concerns about pelvic floor function, and uncertainty about returning to running, gym training, or daily activity.
What happens during an appointment?
Your physiotherapist will discuss your symptoms, goals, birth or medical history where relevant, and the activities you want to return to. Assessment may include posture, breathing, abdominal control, hip and back movement, strength, balance, and functional movement.
What we may assess
- Breathing, posture, and abdominal control
- Hip, pelvis, and lower back movement
- Pelvic floor contraction and relaxation where appropriate
- Return-to-running, lifting, or gym readiness
Why supervision matters
NICE recommends pelvic floor muscle training programmes are supervised by a physiotherapist or appropriately trained professional, with exercises tailored to the person.
Treatment and rehabilitation
A plan may include education, manual therapy, pelvic floor guidance, core and hip strengthening, mobility work, graded return to exercise, and advice to manage symptoms during daily life. The focus is sustainable recovery, not quick generic exercises.
When to book
Book if pain, weakness, heaviness, leaking, or fear of movement is affecting your day. You do not need to wait until symptoms are severe to get support.
